Production facility with storage for district cooling
Location: Stockholm
Client: AB Fortum Värme, co-owned with the City of Stockholm
The production facility is located in the bedrock beneath Stadshagens IP on Kungsholmen. The 50,000 m³ storage tank makes the facility unique worldwide. The storage is charged overnight by cooling its water using the district cooling network, which in turn is cooled by cold water from Värtan, known as free cooling. During peak demand periods, the cooling is drawn from the storage and distributed to customers. This method increases the proportion of environmentally friendly free cooling in the production mix. For temperature assurance, the facility also has four high-efficiency chillers.
Termoekonomi has been involved in the project for several years. Initially, as consultants developing the system concept and decision-making documentation. Subsequently, as project designers, construction managers, and installation coordinators. Finally, we commissioned the entire facility and produced complete project documentation.
The Hornsberg facility was commissioned in spring 2010 and has since delivered district cooling with very high availability.
